Come see our latest exhibit, “The Spirit of Block Island”, open now!

We are excited to debut our new exhibit in the West Gallery: "The Spirit of Block Island." Building upon the success of our well-received 2023 exhibit, "Reluctant Paradise," this presentation delves into Block Island narratives from the years 1915 through the 1940s. From World War I and the 1919 Pandemic to Prohibition, the rise of radio culture, the Great Depression, and the devastating Hurricane of 1938, the Island's story mirrors the broader history of our nation.

Running from May 25th to October 14th, "The Spirit of Block Island" offers visitors a compelling insight into our shared history. With the help of Brian Jones, a highly regarded Rhode Island-based designer with an impressive track record (including projects with Roger Williams Park, the Providence Preservation Society, and our own Block Island Free Library) and new photographs and artifacts that have been "rediscovered," thanks to the generous support of the GRoW @ Annenberg Foundation, we feel this exhibit will enlighten and engage your during your visit.

We are also thrilled to announce that our Thursday night programs are continuing with an exciting array of topics guaranteed to captivate and educate. From the intricacies of the Narragansett Diaspora to the Speakeasies of Block Island, our lineup promises something for everyone interested in history. Additionally, we’re offering historical cemetery tours and hosting Manissean/Narragansett tribal events.

As you look ahead to visiting the Historical Society, we want to remind those who haven't yet renewed their membership for 2024 to do so online or by mail. Your continued support is invaluable to us, and we appreciate your membership. New members are always welcome! Additionally, we encourage donations, which enable us to continue our mission of preserving and sharing the rich history of Block Island.

We're looking forward to welcoming you to the Block Island Historical Society and sharing these exciting offerings with you.
