Reluctant Paradise: A Glimpse into Block Island's Unique Postwar Era
As the summer of 2023 came to an end, so did our highly anticipated seasonal exhibit "Reluctant Paradise" in the West Gallery of the Block Island Historical Society. What a journey it was! From its opening to the final day, the exhibit invoked curiosity, sparked nostalgia, and offered a mesmerizing dive into a fascinating yet often-overlooked period in Block Island's history.
"Reluctant Paradise" transported visitors through time to the two-decade span that began with the postwar period of 1950 and culminated in the "rediscovery" of Block Island as a tourist destination in 1970. This unique time on the island was characterized by a distinctive charm, with derelict buildings, faded paint, and a slower pace of life that stood in stark contrast to the rapid transformations that were sweeping over the mainland.
While the mainland experienced a homogenization of American culture, Block Island remained an island apart. The island's micro and macro histories converged to reveal the profound depth of its uniqueness during this era. The exhibit aimed to explore how Block Island retained its distinctive character amidst the shifting tides of the postwar period, emphasizing its significance as a "reluctant paradise."
"Reluctant Paradise" was made possible through an extensive digitization effort that brought to life over two decades of memories, photos, and documents. The digitization of these historical artifacts was made possible through the generous support of the GRoW @ Annenberg Foundation.
